Sigit Nur Iman Wibowo (Master’s Alumni, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, 2017) Junior Consultant at UNDP Indonesia

Sigit’s interest in development led him to pursue a master’s degree at PSdK FISIPOL UGM. With a bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Science and Regional Development from UGM, Sigit found it difficult to adjust to the field of social sciences. To overcome his difficulties, Sigit learned a lot from his friends, made use of the library’s book facilities, and discussed with lecturers. According to Sigit, the learning atmosphere at PSdK greatly helped him in the adaptation process, enabling him to complete his studies according to his plan. PSdK is very accommodating to the multitasking needs of Master’s students, most of whom are already working, either as employees or entrepreneurs (3 days a week).

During his studies, Sigit gained a lot of knowledge about community development efforts, including problem handling and community development strategies, and had many opportunities to develop his skills and abilities through field visits and networking, both with local and international institutions through the Joint Course Program with fellow students from the University of Melbourne.

According to Sigit, one thing that students, especially PSdK students, need to understand is that studying at university is not only about understanding the substance or lecture material, but more about shaping mindsets, developing character, and building networks. “In my experience, in the world of work, it is not only a high GPA that is needed, but responsibility and integrity are the main things to achieve success,” said Sigit. Students also need to develop an adaptive mindset, such as the ability to understand the characteristics of the communities they serve with their diverse cultures and the willingness to learn new things related to the field of development.
