The Doctoral Program of Social Development and Welfare (PSdK) is aimed at producing social development theories that not only respond to discourse at the global level, but also to the characteristics of Indonesia and other developing countries in the context of the global south which have different social, cultural, economic, and political structures from developed countries that have been the reference for social development science. The Doctoral Program of PSdK is designed to develop various social development academic discourse, different social development policies, and to contribute to solving contemporary social issues in order to realize a prosperous community.
The Doctoral Program of PSdK is aimed at academics and practitioners to produce doctors who are projected to (1) have the responsibility to contribute to the development of science by conducting research to produce new theories, (2) become academics or social development practitioners whose presence will have a significant and broad impact on the social development process in Indonesia and the world.

The graduates of Doctoral Program of PSdK are projected to be experts in the field of Social Development (Academician or Social Development Expert/SDE). An SDE is an expert focusing as a formulator of new theories in Social Development Science. Furthermore, an SDE will be a policymaker of community development. This includes expert or senior level personnel whose field of work is to create development policies based on community initiatives that supervise field planners and facilitators. They are top managers who are able to coordinate various efforts and activities of both government, corporations, and civil society organizations.
SDE should be able to be a doctoral graduate with responsibility to contribute to the development of science by conducting research to produce new theories; become academics or social development practitioners whose presence will have a significant and broad impact on the social development process in Indonesia and the world.
In accordance with the development of the doctoral program at Universitas Gadjah Mada, the Doctoral Program of Social Development and Welfare (PSdK) is a regular path. As one of the prerequisites for graduation, students must write a dissertation and publish their scientific work in reputable national and international journals. The curriculum of the Doctoral Program of PSdK is designed to be completed in 3 years covering five courses that students must take in semesters 1 and 2. It is then followed by research, and dissertation writing and publication in semester 3, 4, and 5. In semester 6, students are expected to conduct a dissertation exam. This course encourages doctoral students to understand the essence of science; what the objects are, how the science is formed, why people need science, how to think about the truth is formed, what kind of thought basis that form knowledge. Therefore, students are encouraged to understand the truth in knowledge. Finally, students are invited to understand not how those theories and methods sound, but why and what the meanings are in the way those science thinking methods are delivered. And those statements are not singular, but plural. It means, there are many different opinions about how to state or question theories and methods (methodology), because the nature of truth in science is not absolute. This course will underlie how methods, or more specifically scientific procedures, are obtained empirically as well as how the process of theory is discovered.
Social Research Methodology course facilitates students to understand and to be able to practice various research reasoning variants and social science research methods.
This course discusses changes in discourse, theory, and development practices, starting from the history of the emergence of development ideas, perspectives on development theories referring to classical economic theory, criticism of economic development, social development theories, and criticism of contemporary social development.
This course discusses the concepts and theories of welfare, as well as welfare regimes development in different countries. Class discussions are directed at conceptual and theoretical debates covering, among others, approaches to utilitarianism, positive subjectivism, social choice, social justice, neo-utilitarianism, and others. With a comprehensive theoretical understanding, students will be able to explain welfare as an output of the social development process in Indonesian and international contexts.
This course is designed to be a place to discuss different social development and welfare issues with theme options that are in line with contemporary issues or students’ research topics. Therefore, students are able to understand, analyze, research, and formulate different contemporary issues related to social development in order to achieve a prosperous community, especially for marginalized communities.
Implementation of dissertation writing.
Dissertation Examination is the final requirement for students to finish their studies in order to earn a doctoral degree. This course is worth 8 credit units.
